Letter to Samoa Observer

God’s guidance has arrived
Tuesday, 04 August 2009 14:50

Dear Editor - I believe God’s guidance has arrived regarding the unresolved grievances of the Samoan public versus the obviously politically motivated leadership of the government of the day who insists on going ahead with the road switch regardless.

First, God’s guidance has arrived in the form of the collective efforts of the concerned matai and the traditional senior leaders of the afio’aga of Lauli’i (see Samoa Observer 31 July 2009 ‘PM, fuafua lelei, Lauli’i’ by Sarai Ripine).

As reported, the matai of the afioaga of Lauli’i held a special meeting to discuss the matter of the Prime Minister’s degradation of one of their matai by calling him an ‘ava’ava (the human waste eating fish).

It is not difficult to imagine what could have been the result of such a meeting, driven by feelings of being pierced with an ‘arrow of insult’ from another matai, however, the senior traditional leaders of the afio’aga of Lauli’i chose to be guided by the spirit of God (ia maua pea le agaga o le Atua) and thus the tofa mamao and fa’autaga loloto remained intact and peace prevailed.

Samoa needs peaceful and honest explanations to questions raised about the much opposed government’s plan to implement the road switch in September of last year.
Second, God’s guidance has also surfaced in the form of Le Tagaloa’s letter to the Observer 01/08/09 titled ‘The Road Transport Bill 2008, is still a Bill, not an Act’.

I think what Le Tagaloa’s letter is prompting is for everyone especially all MPs and all matai of Samoa - to read the Constitution of the Independent State of Samoa especially Article 102 and proviso to Article 109.

Le Tagaloa points out that the Transport Bill that was passed by Parliament early this year and still being opposed publicly should not have been signed by the Head of State unless supported by a 2/3 of valid votes cast in a poll of matai.
Will Tuilaepa’s government go ahead with its September Switch Plan given what can be seen as God’s clear guidance to the nation?

Ma lo’u fa’aaloalo lava
