Story Of The Extended Family of Vavae Toma and Avai'a Toma (nee Enesi)
The story of the Extended Family told here, is the story of the ongoing commitment of love, care and support demonstrated by the families connected and related through the marriage of Vavae Toma and Avai’a Enesi. The marriage of Vavae Toma and Avai’a Enesi took place on, 31 January 1942. at the village of Moata'a, Apia, Western Samoa. It was the beginning of a relationship of sharing and caring, witnessed over the years by descendants of the two families.
Occasions such as the death of Avaia Toma, the death of Toma Vavae Toma and the recent death of Vavae Toma brought to the fore this commitment of love and caring amongst the family members. As the writer of this story, who has witnessed the ongoing commitment by the relatives from Sato’alepai, Sapapali’i, Moata’a, Fasito’outa, and Tutuila, I pray that the commitment to love, care and share by the families will be continued in to the future.
It can be traced to the early ancestors of the Toma-Pani Ainu’u and Enesi-Fina’i connections.
The Toma Ancestors and Descendants
The Toma Ancestors can be identified as those who held the Matai Title Polutea and who preside over the Aiga at Sato’alepai, Savai’i. The records from Vavae Toma(my father) show some of the early Polutea. There was Polutea Manumea(1), Polutea Manufou(2), Maiava-Polutea Tiaitauma(3), Maiava-Polutea Tagiamaile(4), Maiava-Polutea Ulutipi(5), Polutea Laausauga(6), Polutea Talitonu(7), Polutea Tumele(8), Polutea Talaga(9), Polutea Kapeteni{10). The current Polutea is Polutea Faletao(11) son of Polutea Kapeteni or Talking Chief Polu, who did all the formal speaking and dealing with the distinguished guests and the many aigas during the funeral of Toma V. Toma(my brother) at Solosolo, in January 2002 and recently at the funeral of Vavae Toma or Tama at Vaivasetai, in May 2004.
Note that the title Maiava was bestowed on Polutea 3,4, and 5. This title was introduced to the family through the marriage of the daughter of Polutea Manumea(1) to Peseta Le Paia producing a son, Suisalaleo’o. Suisala and his first wife from the village of Palauli then produced I’amaileava Maiava (the first Maiava in the Polutea family). Polutea Tiaitauma was bestowed the title Maiava in honour of the acts of kindness and love showed to the descendants of Maiava. From then on the holder of the title Polutea had the right to the title Maiava and had the authority and informed consent of the family to bestow the title Maiava on any suitable family member. Iulai Toma received the title Maiava through the authority of Polutea Kapeteni and the consensus of the Polutea family.
The man and woman who were directly responsible for the first Toma were Polutea Laausauga(6) and his wife, Olive, daughter of Solofuti. Polutea Laausauga(6) and Olive Solofuti had four sons and one daughter. Three of the four sons held the Polutea title. The oldest was Polutea Talitonu(7), the second oldest was Polutea Tumele(8), the third oldest son was Toma (did not hold any matai title), the fourth oldest was Polutea Talaga(9) and their only daughter was Fa’amaile(never married).
Polutea Talitonu(7) married twice. First marriage to Sina from the village of Lelepa and issued one daughter, Fili. The marriage of Fili to Aufa’i issued Fa’avaoa and Faipeaia or Peaia. Second marriage of Talitonu to Osooso from Matavai Savai'i issued Vaialia, Lipine, Line, and Maluafou. Fili's marriage to Talamaivao issued Masae, whilst Fili's marriage to Leutulava of Sale'aula issued Talatau, and Talatofi
Toma(1) first married Ataga’i from the village of Sataua and issued one son, Tauinaola, or Ola as some of you youngsters remember. According to Tama, Ataga’i was a beautiful lady who fell in love with Toma while he was a teacher at the Malua Theological College. Ataga’i fell ill and died.
Then Toma(1) married another beautiful lady, Fo’ilagi Ainuu Pani, from Sapapalii and created the links with the Ainuu, Muaausa and Malietoa family.Toma and his wife, Fo’ilagi, had nine children, six boys and three girls. The sons were Poka or Kapoka, Vavae, Kapeteni, Laausauga(died at childhood), Uatisone and Iulai. The daughters were Safotu, Olive and Perise. Iulai the youngest son, was born to Safotu but raised as the youngest son of Toma and Fo’ilagi. When Toma and Fo’ilagi became frail, Vavae and and Avai’a continued the parental role to Iulai.
Poka Toma married twice. First, to Fia , issued two daughters, Sape(Fusipala), Olive and son Uati(RIP). No children from second marriage. (3)
Vavae Toma married Avai’a Enesi and issued Fo’ilagi, Lua’ipou, Enesi, Meripa, Toma(RIP), Seine, Tusipa, Nikolao. In addition, Vavae and Avaia carried out a parental role to Peaia Aufa’i, Iulai Toma, Talalelei Toma and Tui Enesi (12). Talalelei was born to Peaia but was raised as the youngest son of Vavae Toma and Avai'a Toma.
Safotu Toma married Va’ai Kolone and issued Vaelupe, Sale’imoa, Aigaga, Iinei, Iina(RIP), Lumepa, Vaemoa, Tui, Fo’ilagi, Leata, Manu and Kesi (12)
Olive Toma married and gave birth to son Olive(now known as Tone). Olive died after giving birth to Tone.
Perise Toma married Limutau Maua and issued Manutagi, Poka, Tauta, Vaigalo, Fotu, Sieni, Safanua, Fo'ilagi, Taia'i, Ailao, Vavae, Tumua, Pema (13)
Kapeteni Toma married Na’oupu and issued Talaga, Faletui, Faletao(current Polutea), Fa’amaile, Leo’o, Alapea, Pita and ...
Uatisone Toma(current Aeoainu'u and Muaausa) married twice. First, to Joyce(English) and issued Jocelyn, Masina, Penina, Karl, Steven. Uati and Joyce also parented Talaga from Kapeteni and Na’oupu’s marriage. Second marriage to Maseiga. They have one daughter.
Iulai Toma married twice. First to Folole Atoa, issued Leuteotifa Julie, and Najo. Second marriage to June Carruthers, issued: Lillian, Mark, Iulai (Jnr), Malcolm and Lauren.

The Ainu'u(Aeoainu'u) - Muaausa Malietoa Ancestors and Descendants
The early ancestors can be traced (according to records kept by my late father Vavae Toma) to those who held the titles: Malietoa, Muaausa, and Aeoainu'u.
who preside over the Aiga at Sapapali'i, Savai'i. We can go back as far as Malietoa Taulapapa and his wife, Tonu'umatasiva (daughter of Leiataua of Manono). Their marriage issued a son, Seiuli and a daughter, Taiaopo.
The marriage of Taia'opo(daughter) to Tuiatua Anovao began a sequence of Malietoa from Malietoa Tuilaepa to Malietoa Tanu II. There was Malietoa Aeoainu'u, Malietoa Laulauafolasa, Malietoa Muagututi'a (Ti'a), Malietoa Fitesemanu, Malietoa Tavita, Malietoa Moli, Malietoa Laupepa, Malietoa Tanu I, Malietoa Tanu II.
The marriage of Seiuli Saua(son) to Salevao Li'o Tama issued Seiuli Tugi. The marriage of Seiuli Tugi to Opomataniu Taiulu issued Taufo'ilematagi (daughter). Interestingly, Malietoa Muagatiti'a married Taufo'ilematagi and issued three boys:Aeoainu'u Muaausa, Sulusulumaivasa and Malietoa Fitesemanu.
Those who held the title Aeoainu'u and Muaausa were: Aeoainu'u Muaausa, Ainu'u Taliileala, Ainuu Movesi, Ainuu Paniani (Pani), Ainu'u Laai, Ainu'u Liuliu (Liu), Ainu'u Anelu, Ainu'u Poka, Ainuu Fereti, and Ainu'u Sio. The current Muaausa is Muaausa Uatisone (my late father's brother at Sapapali'i). The mother of Muaausa Uatisone was Foilagi the daughter of Ainu'u Pani and Perise Tuala.
Ainu'u Pani married Perise Tuala of Safa'ato'a, and issued Silafaga, Luisa, Noue, Feagai, Aeoainu'u Liuliu, Fereti, Leitu and Fo'ilagi (my grandmother).
The Vaimasenu'u/ Tamapua Ancestors and Descendants
According to records kept by Michael Jones, the early anscestors can be traced to those who held the titles; Tamapua and Vaimasenu'u who preside over the Aiga at Moata'a. Niko Vaimasenu'u/Tamapua of Moata'a, married Meripa of Moata'a and Sapapali'i and issued 'Apa, Enesi(my grandfather), Timena, Arieta, Samu, Uili and Peni.
Enesi Vaimasenu'u/ Tamapua married Seine Fina'i of Fasito'o and issued Arieta, Fa'ailoilo, Fa'ailoa, Avai'a(my mother), and Pelekina. Enesi and Seine were also parents to Viliamu and Fesilafa'i (Seine's sister Sasa married Iose Feaunafi and gave birth to Fesilafa'i who was parented and raised by Enesi and Seine at Utulei as Fesilafa'i Enesi).
