Samoan Politics Undermines Historical Moment

Samoan Politics Undermines Moment of History

Dear Editor,

Judging from the content of your newspaper over the last few days, it is obvious that the Prime Minister and his HRPP Casino and Gambling 2010 Bill has dominated the minds of the public as compared to the attention given to the significance of the actions of the three Faipules – Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi, Palusalue Fa’apo II, and Va’ai Papu Vailupe. In fact, this appears a deliberate ploy by the PM and his HRPP to undermine the historical significance of the principled acts in Parliament by the three matais.

I would like to suggest to the people of Samoa in Samoa and around the world, to put aside the casino issue for a moment and give recognition to the three brave matais for creating a “principled moment” in the political history of Samoa.

Let me say to the three matais that by your actions you have demonstrated a “Jesus” moment for Samoa and that your sacrifice to ensure democratic principles is an example to the younger generations aspiring to become politicians of the future Samoa. May God be with you in your preparations and deliberations in your by-elections.

I say to the voters - Samoa needs men of principle to represent you in Parliament. May God guide you to make an informed individual principled decision.

Ia manuia le sauni atu mo faiga palota i Faleata i Sisifo, Safata ma Vaisigano Numera Tasi.

Ma lo’u fa’aaloalo lava,

Meripa Weir (Keen Samoan Watcher from Abroad)
